The Coastal division in the ACC has a number of players that are ranked higher than they should be. That is what this article is referring to when the term overrated is used. It was difficult to pick one player for some teams – Duke comes to mind.
Others, with recent history in mind, could have had many players make this list (Looking at you, North Carolina defenders). The players mentioned are considered talented, but not worthy of the high draft grades.
Duke Blue Devils
QB Sean Renfree
An overrated player on Duke? Maybe if we were talking hoops. Renfree makes the list because of the rumblings in the scouting community. Many mention his NFL size and him having the same HC that helped Peyton Manning. Some have placed him as high as the first round. Solid player, but that is crazy talk.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
RB Orwin Smith
This is a very talented college running back. He plays in the Tech triple option offense. The same Yellow Jackets offense that produced Jonathan Dwyer and Tashard Choice. Neither of which have had much success in the NFL, to this point. Maybe Smith breaks the trend, but history is not in his favor.
FS Ray-Ray Armstrong
Armstrong has elite size and is very athletic. He would do some damage on a flag football field. Ray-Ray will be drafted high by a team that puts a high emphasis on the Combine and Pro Day numbers. Until it clicks on the field, he shouldn’t be selected before the 3rd round.
North Carolina Tar Heels
MLB Kevin Reddick
North Carolina has been a great place to find overrated defenders over the past few years. Reddick is next in line. Kevin has some solid attributes. He’s a good blitzer has some coverage ability and makes a few incredible plays on tape. He has some serious work to do on his tackling technique. He’s either diving at the ball carrier or giving them a bear hug around the shoulders. Many other options available before Reddick should be considered.
RT Morgan Moses*
Moses is a junior, but there are not many options on the Cavaliers. Some have made statements that Morgan will be a better prospect than Oday Aboushi. That statement shouldn’t be made yet. That is why Moses makes this list. He has some skills and great size, so it’s possible. But not when Aboushi is an All American candidate and potential 1st round pick.
Virginia Tech Hokies
WR Marcus Davis
Davis is a big-bodied WR for the Hokies. He has some solid skills and can go up and get the ball. With all that being said, why isn’t he more dominant on the field? He has been an average target for the Hokies QBs. He was behind 2 of the most prolific WR in VaTech history, but they graduated. This is his chance to be the man. It’s doubtful he will do much with the opportunity.
