The MAC’s Most Overrated

Should Zac Dysert be considered overrated? (Photo: US Presswire)

Overrated and MAC football usually don’t go well with one another. This conference is loaded with talent that wasn’t good enough to make a BCS conference’s roster. These athletes are try hard, and play with a chip on their shoulder.

Overrated in the MAC might mean a player is being considered for the NFL. While the NFL is littered with MAC players, the stars are few and far between. Let’s use the term “overrated” loosely in this article.

Akron Zips

This team went 0-8 in the MAC last year. The Zips roster isn’t loaded with talent. The player that might have been a good fit here, MLB Brian Wagner, transferred to Arizona. DE John Griggs is a big body, but little else. This team just doesn’t have a player worthy of calling overrated.

Ball State Cardinals

The Cardinals have some talent on each side of the ball. The defense is led by inside linebacker, Travis Freeman. Freeman is considered by some evaluators as an NFL talent. This has yet to be seen. He racks up tackles and has athleticism, but his size leaves something to be desired.

Bowling Green Falcons

Bowling Green has a couple senior defenders that should see an NFL roster in 2013. Defensive tackle Chris Jones and linebacker Dwayne Woods lead this group. While they are stars in the MAC, I can’t see each player making an impact at the next level.

Jones is a TFL machine at DT. Woods makes a ton of tackles. He might need to switch positions to make an NFL roster, as his size is a concern to some. Woods could be a nice sub package LB/S combo due to his athleticism.

Buffalo Bulls

Buffalo is another MAC team lacking talent. Outside linebacker Khalil Mack is a special player, but is only a Jr.  He has another big year in 2012, he could enter the discussion. The same goes for Jr running back Branden Oliver. These two players should help the Bulls get back to the middle of the pack, at best.

Central Michigan Chippewas

Chippewas FS Jahleel Addae led his team in tackles and the MAC in interceptions. A repeat performance should garner him some NFL looks. While those are two statistical feats, he needs to have a repeat performance. The tackles stat is due to his defensive line being as strong as a wet paper bag.

Once again, taking the term overrated loosely for the purpose of this article is appreciated.

Eastern Michigan Eagles

Linebacker Justin Cudworth and defensive end Andy Mulumba are the highest regarded players on this roster. That being said, neither are NFL talents. Things could change in the upcoming season, but don’t look for either player to take a huge step forward.
