Check out my thoughts on the Chiefs schedule weeks 1-4.

Week 5 v. Baltimore Ravens

This should be a good one. These teams are similarly built, with strong defenses and ground games. The Ravens defense is more proven than the Chiefs, but their stars are getting older. The last time Baltimore was in Kansas City, it wasn’t pretty. They handed the Chiefs a humiliating playoff loss. That was the game where people said they saw Charlie Weis at local restaurants during the second half.

The Chiefs can win this game with a good game from Matt Cassel. He has to be more than a game manager in this one, as Baltimore is great vs the run. I’m looking forward to the battles in the trenches with the Chiefs OL and Ravens DL. The additions of Eric Winston and Kevin Boss are huge in games like this. They will get more push than their predecessors.

One worry I have is Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis biting on the play action fake. Joe Flacco has a speedy weapon that can get behind the Chiefs secondary quickly, in Torrey Smith. The box will be full of Chiefs defenders with Ray Rice getting the ball early and often, so it’s something to keep an eye on.

Prediction: The game is at Arrowhead, I’ll take the Chiefs 20-17.

Week 6 @ Tampa Bay Bucs

Tampa Bay is loaded with young talent. They had a great draft in April and signed some key pieces that will help immediately. They brought in a college coach in Greg Schiano from Rutgers. He’s going to need to take some pressure off of Josh Freeman, let him get his game back to 2010 levels. They’ll lean on a tremendous offensive line and strong ground game, featuring LeGarrette Blount and rookie Doug Martin.

This plays into the Chiefs projected strength. With Dontari Poe in the middle, the Chiefs should be one of the league’s best against the run. Freeman does have a new target at wide receiver in Vincent Jackson. With his big arm and Jackson’s ability to catch the deep ball, this could create similar problems to the Ravens’ game.

Kansas City should be able to control the ball with their ground game. Tampa Bay has a young defensive line that is full of potential, but it hasn’t shown it yet. Cassel will have opportunities against a young safety combo as well.

Prediction: I’ll take the Chiefs in a dominating victory. KC is just too seasoned and talented to lose a game they should win. Chiefs win 27-17

This comes at a perfect time for the Chiefs. The first six weeks of the season have been against some physical teams. If Kansas City can get to this point without suffering any “major” injuries, we should be in good shape for the stretch run.
