Chiefs Training Camp News and Notes: 8/14/2012

August 15th, 2012

We’re down to our last few practices in St Joe.

KCCD Editor: Jason Madson

Today’s practice flew by. We had beautiful weather and a lot of action on the practice field. Surprised that there weren’t many fans in attendance today. There are only 2 days left, so if you haven’t been up to the MO West campus yet, I’d make the trip.  Head inside for notes and some pictures from Tuesday’s camp practice.

Walk Thru

-Wasn’t able to get much from this session. Was busy chatting with the security guard at the far endzone. Really nice guy that loves to talk college football.

QB/WR Drills

-Matt Cassel shows off his arm to Jonathan Baldwin on a deep post. Very nice throw, Cassel was pumped up after Baldwin made the catch.

-Ricky Stanzi is working a separate drill with running backs. He’s usually a part of this group.

-Josh Bellamy continues to have the drops.

-Defensive backs on the 2nd field are working their zone coverage responsibilities. It’s boring to watch so I glance over to see what’s going on every once in a while.

DB v WR 4 on 5

-Cassel hits Tony Moeaki on a drag route.

-Brady Quinn with a very low ball to Steve Maneri, but he dropped it.

-Matt Cassel to Steve Breaston on flag route in the endzone. Beats Jalil Brown with a beautiful tossed pass.

-Jonathan Baldwin beats Eric Berry with the out route. He went over the top of Berry and his zone.

Offense vs Defense 9 on 7

-Eric Winston hooks Tyson Jackson to get Peyton Hillis free to the outside.

-Hillis with a huge cutback left as entire D was headed right.

-Roptati Pitoitua pushes David Mims back into the hole, but Jamal Charles just went around the detour.

-Derrick Johnson drills Jon Asamoah, they shook hands after the play.

-Jerrell Powe pushes Lucas Patterson back into play. Edgar Jones cleans up for the tackle for loss.

-Brandon Bair puts Donald Stephenson on the ground.

-Jerrell Powe with a big hit on Nate Eachus. Puts the running back parallel to the ground.

DB v WR 1 on 1

-Steve Breaston pushed off Neiko Thorpe in a big way to get open.

-Zeke Markshausen way too quick for Terrance Parks to cover.

-Dexter McCluster works Jean Fanor over.

-Jonathan Baldwin takes the ball away from Jalil Brown.

Anthony Pleasant Works With Dontari Poe

-This was an enjoyable 10 minutes of practice. Had a spot that was about 10-15 feet away from these 2 during the special teams portion.

-Worked on staying at the same level during and after Poe’s initial punch, weight distribution and hips.

-Anthony Pleasant is a great teacher. Demonstrated everything that he was trying to teach.

-Poe was willing to learn as well. Worked hard on every rep to get better at what he was being taught.

-Pretty sure between Poe and Pleasant, one of them was going to knock down the goal post.

2 on 2 OL v DL

-The defensive line had the option of working a stunt, or going straight up the field. The offensive line didn’t know what they were going to do.

-Eric Winston and Jon Asamoah struggle to pick up Andy Studebaker who goes right between the 2 of them.

-Ropati Pitoitua crosses Ryan Lilja’s face. He’s too powerful for Lilja to stop.

-Asamoah works off double team to pick up the stunt perfectly.

-Edgar Jones pancaked Ryan Lilja who stepped over to pick him up.

-Gabe Miller looking good with the speed rush in this drill. Tyson Jackson crashes outside, creating lane for Miller inside.

-Jeff Allen crashes down on double team, then steps out to pick up a stunting Jerome Long. Very impressive rep by the rookie.

-Brandon Bair keeps taking steps back in practice. He struggles to get any push and even his punch off the line is weak. Very disappointing rep for Bair.

-Dontari Poe walked Allen back into pocket.

-Tamba Hali too quick for Donald Stephenson to the inside.

-Didn’t look like Justin Cheadle even touched Ropati Pitoitua.

-Poe with a nice swim move over Rich Ranglin.

-Cheadle makes up for last rep. Works off a combo block on Bailey to pick up a stunting Poe.

-During this line work I glance over at the WR DB 1 on 1 to see Josh Bellamy make a great leaping catch. He used his hands and looked it in. Very impressed by the rookies effort.

I love this daily updates. Cant start my day without them.
Question for you; is Cassel really looking that good or are we just more used to him looking so bad every preseason? What i saw in that first preseason game and what i keep reading here is starting to make me think that it might be ok for me to get excited about Matt.

    • Jason Madson says:

I’m not a huge Cassel fan, and I’m excited. He looks more comfortable in every aspect. Has freedom at the line to make or change calls, much more than under Haley. Zorn and Daboll should be a great team for Cassel to learn from an lean on. He’s not one of the league’s best, but I see him as more than a “game manager”.
