Chiefs vs Cardinals: Film Room Breakdown

August 13th, 2012

Tamba Hali and the Chiefs pass rush looked great in Friday night’s game.

For each of the 4 Chiefs preseason games I’lll be bringing you notes similar to those in the Scouting the Draft series. Mike Loyko at NEPD  is doing this for the Patriots over there as well. These will give you an idea of who did what on each play. More inside the game than just watching the football. Give it a look and if you like it, we do this for all the major college football games and prospects each week. Check out the pictures at the end, as I took a few live from Arrowhead.

 1st Quarter

-Chiefs receive the kickoff. Arenas gets it and goes, there is no indecisiveness with him. He was helped on a nice block by Terrance Copper. Ball to the 28 yard line.

-Matt Cassel shows nice touch on an out route to Dexter McCluster. Hit him in stride.

-Cassel overthrows Jamaal Charles on a screen. Felt the heat from an unblocked outside linebacker.

-Chiefs showing multiple formations to start the game. Now in 5 wide set. He hits Dexter on a pivot route.

-Peyton Hillis with a short run to the right side. Jon Asamoah failed to get a hat on the linebacker that made the play. They work on this everyday in practice. I’m sure Chiefs OL Coach Bicknell was pissed during film session.

-Jamaal Charles takes a quick handoff, also receives a big hit to his lower body. Fumbles on the play, but was down.

-Branden Albert drove Calais Campbell 5 yards down the field, Shaughn Draughn cuts and hits the hole hard. Picks up 4, but just short of the first.

-4th and less than a yard in the first preseason game and we’re seeing more of Chiefs OC Daboll’s creativity. Chiefs were lined up in short yardage formation, then Cassel shifts everybody wide with empty backfield. Cassel sneaks for the first. Daboll is making a great first impression thru camp and the first game.

-Nate Eachus at fullback in front of Charles. Charles follows his blocks left for 5 hard yards. Ryan Lilja and Eachus with some quality blocking on this play.

-Loved watching the zone blocking in action on this play. Moeaki, Winston and Asamoah all working side by side, driving defenders down field. Big run by Hillis for 6.

-Cassel throws incomplete to an open Jonathan Baldwin. Baldwin had a step on his man, but the ball came in underthrown due to pressure. Defender called for roughing the passer on this play.

-The Chiefs Offensive line is looking good with the zone blocking thus far. Asamoah drives Darnell Dockett down the line to open a big cutback lane for Hillis. Peyton showed off nice explosion on this play.

-Peyton Hillis sneaks out of the backfield to the left. Cassel delivers a beauty under pressure. Touchdown Kansas City. Cassel is excited after this one. Beautiful first drive, bailed out on 1 play, but otherwise looked dominant.

-Ryan Succop boots his first kickoff out of the endzone.

-Jalil Brown playing off the WR, his man makes a 10 yard grab.

-Jovan Belcher came on a blitz. He jumps over a blocker and flies wildly thru the air. QB just steps to the side and delivers a throw.

-Derrick Johnson continues to impress. He’s been the best defender at training camp and it continues to begin tonight. He slips a block on 3rd and short to make a tackle for loss.

-Arizona has to punt. Abe Elam nearly makes the punt block.

-Cassel to Charles on a screen. Charles picks up 11 after the catch.

-Peyton Hillis with a monster gain of 28 yards. He broke numerous arm tackles along the way. It all started up front though with some textbook blocking by the Chiefs right side. Kevin Boss and Eric Winston push there men out and Jon Asamoah walls the inside defender off. You could drive a large truck thru this hole.

-McCluster with a corner route, I think. Cassel and Draughn sell the play action well. Cassel hits Dexter for a big gain.

-Kevin Boss turns his man out, Moeaki blocks 2 men. Draughn stretches behind the 2 TE’s for a TD.

-Anthony Toribio throws the center to the side, makes the play on the running back in the backfield. He bear hugged him to the ground.

-Justin Houston manned up on the TE and broke up the pass.

-Dontari Poe in for 1st time. Double teamed. Houston, Hali and Derrick Johnson all in backfield for the sack.

-Brady Quinn in at QB.

-Quinn hands off to Cyrus Gray. Gray hesitates for a second before grabbing the ball. Explodes to the left for 9 yards.

-Quinn hangs Terrance Copper out to dry.

-Quinn to Josh Bellamy on a hitch route. Bellamy drops the catchable ball. Have seen this way too much from Josh at Training Camp. He lets the ball get into his body, needs to trust those hands.

-Donald Stephenson showing off some good footwork in mirroring the defender in pass pro.

-1st team defense still in for third series.

-Stanford Routt covering Larry Fitzgerald on a slant. Complete pass. Difficult to cover him in that situation. Routt called for pass interference, but I didn’t see it.

-Big gain for Alfonso Smith. Eric Berry came flying in with his head down to make a big hit, but he missed it. The running back went down after losing his balance on a spin move. You can’t hit what you can’t see Mr. Berry.
