The Chiefs have gone through several weeks of training camp and showed some of the best early Chiefs football in a long time in their preseason debut vs. Arizona Cardinals.   I first projected a 53 man roster about 2 months ago, this roster has about a half dozen different names on it.  I will follow up this projection with a break down of the changes with in the next 24 hours.

This projection really throws out of the window your typical roster configuration by position and incorporates the top 53 contributors that will make the Chiefs final 53.  I broke it down by position, though, for easy reading.

Quarterbacks:  Matt Cassel, Brady Quinn, Ricky Stanzi (3)

Running Backs:  Jamaal Charles, Peyton Hillis, Cyrus Grey, Shaun Draughn, Shane Bannon (5)

Tight Ends:  Tony Moeaki, Kevin Boss, Steve Maneri (3)

Offensive Tackles:  Branden Albert, Eric Winston, Donald Stephenson (3)

Interior Offensive Line: Ryan Lilja, Jon Asomoah, Jeff Allen, Rodney Hudson (4)

Wide Receivers:  Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston, Jon Baldwin, Dexter McCluster, Devon Wylie, Terrance Copper, Josh Bellamy (7)

Special Teams:  Thomas Gafford, Ryan Succop, Dustin Colquitt (3)

Defensive Line:  Dontari Poe, Anthony Toribio, Amon Gordon, Tyson Jackson, Glen Dorsey, Ropati Pitoitua, Allen Bailey (7)

Linebackers:  Justin Houston, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Jovan Belcher, Brandon Siler, Andy Studebaker, Cory Greenwood, Cameron Sheffield (8)

Defensive Backs:  Brandon Flowers, Eric Berry, Kendrick Lewis, Travis Daniels, Abe Elam, Stanford Routt, Javier Arenas, Jalil Brown, DeQuan Menzie, Jacques Reeves (10)

7 OL is a bit thin. Normally the Chiefs carry 8 OL and what seems to be missing is a backup Center since Jeff Allen is a G/T.

Both of the other C’s currently on the roster (Bruggeman and Holland) are a bit raw. I can see the Chiefs adding some Post Final Cut Down insurance in a veteran backup center like Dan Koppen from the Pats since he is a likely final cut for them.

  2. Nate says:

Nice job man. I disagree about Powe. I think he’s a lock. He might not practice well but he was really good in the game.

I think Bellamy is out. I can’t see us having more than six WRs. I’m not sure about 4 RBs either but maybe?

I won’t be suprised if KC only keeps to 2 QBs.

I wish we had signed Mughelli or Polite because Bannon is bad. He is just to slow getting to his block. We need a thumper like Vickers, the guy Daboll had in Cleveland. If we got a pure blocking FB, Hillis would be unstoppable again.

  3. ChiefMojo says:

So you think Jerrel Powe will be let go? That is the only one I question.

  4. Jason Madson says:

Nice work! After the last week and the game, I’ll find a spot on my roster for Pitoitua as well.

  5. FanZed says:

    1. I question whether KC will keep Shane Bannon on the active roster. Does he contribute on special teams? How well do the other RBs block, especially in picking up blitzes and in short yardage situations?
    2. I have read the Bellamy gets open at will but drops a lot of passes. I’m hoping that Hemingway can get back into the mix. I like his overall game more and I think that Daboll could create a number of mismatches by lining him up at any position in a formation — backfield, TE, slot, and split wide.
    3. Studebaker is too slow for the OLB position. Any chance that Gabe Miller can take his place?
    4. I’m surprised that you have Reeves making the cut. What’s his value over, say, Donald Washington?

    • Jinx Allessio says:

      1. Bannon does so much on special teams, and Daboll uses pure FBs often. I think he has a role on this team.
      2. I am hoping Hemingway gets healthy, if not they may IR him. Dont know how bad his injury is.
      3. Gabe Miller needs to show a lot this year, especially rushing the passer which Stude is not the best at. Stude’s value comes on STs and cam Sheffield is stepping his game up big time.
      4. Reeves has much more experience in the NFL than Washington. Reeves can play the jam better than most on the team.

  6. Kody says:

    No Torribio on the DL?
