It’s Saturday morning, get your seat and notebook ready. There are 12 games I’ll be watching/DVRing this week with many prospects in each game. As alway, use this as a tool to see who I feel the would fit in with the Chiefs scheme’s and philosophy. It’s also a great guide for where and when the games are on television. Head inside and enjoy.
11:00 AM
Maryland @ West Virginia (FX)
This could be the game that we get to see the return of former ALL-ACC LB/S Kenny Tate. He’s been out for over a year and I am anxiously waiting for him to return., The Terrapins also have a couple defensive linemen I’m curious about in Joe Vellano and AJ Francis. Both could be plyaers in a 3-4 front.
West Virginia is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball. QB Geno Smith is one of our favorites in this upcoming class. He is poised, can move and is extremely accurate. Is a first round pick in my eyes. Helping Smith look so good, or maybe it’s the other way around, are WRs Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey. Austin is a flashy big play threat, while Bailey can take it to the house, but is also a more complete WR. Would love to see one of these playmakers in a Chiefs uniform next year to open up the offense.
The Mountaineers have some big boys in the trenches as well. Look at center Joe Madsen and Defensive end in the WVU 3-4 Will Clarke.
Bowling Green @ Virginia Tech (ESPNU)
I’m not too familiar with the Bowling Green Falcons, but I have heard of a few players. I’m going to watch there entire team, but 3 guys I’ll watch closely are: QB Matt Schilz, DT Chris Jones and inside linebacker Dwayne Woods.
Virginia Tech is becoming a weekly habit for me. I probably don’t even need to name the players, but I will anyway. Struggling QB Logan Thomas is still one of my favorites. Big bodied WR Marcus Davis can change a game with his size/speed combo. Hokie center Andrew Miller is a junior prospect that moves like a guard.
James Gayle, Derrick Hopkins and JR Collins are talents up front defensively for the Hokies. Behind them is a plethora of talent. Linebackers Jack Tyler and Bruce Taylor at linebacker and Kyle Fuller and Antone Exum at cornerback. Exum is a monster. Built like a safety or small linebacker prospect.
Virginia @ TCU (ESPN)
Virgina has bookend tackles in Oday Aboushi and Morgan Moses. These 2 are extremely talented. Most feel Oday is the better prospect, but I’ll go with Moses, who is a junior. Michael Rocco is an interesting QB prospect. He has the size to play at the next level, but I question some of his decisions.
TCU has a big time QB in Casey Pachall. If you can get past the past issues, tattoos and him shaving his jersey number into the side of his head, he’s a talented player. I liked what I saw out of Waymon James last week, but the running back tore his ACl and is out for the season. Keep an eye on running back Matthew Tucker this week. WR Josh Boyce and right guard Blaize Foltz are 2 more Horned Frogs to take a look at on offense.
Defensively, TCU has defensive end Stansly Maponga, LB Kenny Cain and cornerback Jason Verrett. Maponga and Verrett are juniors.
2:30 PM
Mizzou @ South Carolina (CBS)
This is a big game. As a Mizzou fan, I will watch as a fan, then hit up the DVR later and check out the prospects. Mizzou has a handful of guys with pro potential. DE Kony Ealy, Michael Sam and Brad Madison all have different pass rushing types, but they work. Sheldon Richardson has been a very solid player in the middle of the Mizzou defensive line. Zaviar Gooden is expected back this week. EJ Gaines locks down his side of the field at cornerback.
Offensively for the Tigers, watch WRs TJ Moe and Marcus Lucas.
South Carolina has some beasts on both sides of the ball. Marcus Lattimore should have a big day vs the Tigers. Defensive end Devin Taylor is 6-8 270 lbs and can move. Linebackers Shaq Wilson and DeVonte Holloman are special players up the middle for the Gamecocks defense.
Oregon State @ UCLA (ABC/ESPN)
UCLA might be the surprise of the early college football season. They are getting solid play from running back Jonathan Frankilin and TE Joe Fauria on offense. Another college 3-4 team on defense, watch DEs Datone Moore and Cassius Marsh. Those 2 are big bodies at the point of attack. Cornerback Sheldon Price leads the nation in interceptions. He’s a taller cornerback prospect at 6-2.
The Beavers have a couple guys to watch in WR Markus Wheaton and dangerous return man/cornerback Jordan Poyer.
5:00 PM
CAL @ USC (PAC12 Network)
This will be a fun game to watch, loaded with big-time prospects. CAL has one of the nation’s top WR in Keenan Allen. He’s 6-3 210 and has scored a rush, return and receiving TD already this year. He is dynamic. QB Zach Maynard is on the small side, but has had a very good start to the year. Check out the Bears front 3 and athletic group of linebackers in their version of the 3-4.
USC QB Matt Barkley has weapons at his disposal. WRs Marqise Lee and Robert Woods are 2 of the best in college. Silas Redd at running back has been a nice addition for the Trojans offense. Hopefully snapping the ball to Barkley is Khaled Holmes, some think he can play anywhere on the offensive line. I’m a huge fan of monster safety TJ McDonald. Look for him to be up in the box all day. Wes Horton should play in this game, he’ll create pressure if in the game. Dion Bailey is just a sophomore, but he is a super athletic linebacker that will make some plays.
6:00 PM
LSU @ Auburn (ESPN)
We discussed the LSU Tigers a couple weeks ago, but pay attention when they are on defense. Every level has a superstar caliber player. The defensive line is led by freakish bookends Sam Montgomery and Barkevious Mingo. Those 2 sweat athleticism. Kevin Minter is a big time inside linebacker prospect. Tharold Simon and Eric Reid make plays in the backfield. Like I said this defense is loaded.
For Auburn, keep watching the TE PhilipLutzenkirchen and defensive end Corey Lemonier. These 2 are among the top at their positions. Chiefs fans want a fullback, check out junior FB Jay Prosch, he’s a wrecking ball.
6:30 PM
Michigan @ Notre Dame (NBC)
Denard Robinson is going to make a very talented RB/WR combo in the mold of Dexter McCluster at the next level. Taylor Lewan is among the best left tackles in college football, even though he is a junior. Defensive end Craig Roh has his moments for the Wolverines, but he’s not high on my list. Same can be said for safety prospect Jordan Kovacs.
Notre Dame has top prospects in ILB Manti Te’o and TE Tyler Eifert. These 2 are the star power on the Fighting Irish. THe rest of the team has some solid talent as well. Hoping to see Kapron Lewis-Moore today, he’s an end in the 3-4 defense. next to him is massive junior NT prospect Louis Nix III. If the Chiefs keep the 3-4 defense, these 2 would be great additions.Prince Shembo can bring the heat from the outside linebacker position.
6:50 PM
Kansas State @ Oklahoma
Collin Klein, the KState QB, is a favorite of mine. Doubt he’s a QB at the next level though. I like him as a TE. Braden Wilson is a huge FB prospect, but a little too tall for my liking. Chris Harper has major potential, would love to see him paired with a more accurate QB. A sleeper of mine is KState LT Cornelius L:ucas. He’s a monster with some skills. Watch him tonight. Arthur Brown leads the KState defense from the middle linebacker position. He showed off his toughness last week, coming back from an early ankle injury to record 12 tackles. Justin Tuggle will be in Landry Jones face all night. Ty Zimmerman is a super active and aggressive safety.
Landry Jones, you either love him or hate him. He can make all the throws, but his head isn’t always right. An H-back prospect I love is Trey Millard, he can do it all. Kenny Stills is an explosive WR that doesn’t always show up.I’m a fan of David King for the Sooners, he’s at DE in this defense. Tom Wort is a stud in the middle for OU, he’s a bit on the small side though. The major talent on defense for the Sooners is in the backfield. Corners Demontre Hurst and Aaron Colvin and Safeties Javon Harris and Tony Jefferson are all capable of making big plays. Want to see Sooners running back Roy Finch touch the ball more.
7:00 PM
Clemson @ Florida State (ABC)
Florida State has a superstar at defensive end. Junior Bjoern Werner is the real deal, he’ll be all over Tajh Boyd today.Linebacker Christian Jones and cornerback Xavier Rhodes are extremely talented as well. EJ Manuel is among college football’s top QBs and obviously the Chiefs are in the market.
Clemson has one prospect I love in WR DeAndre Hopkins. Although he’s just a junior, watch out for this superstar today. Andre Ellington has been at Clemson for 12 years, but I’m still a fan.
Syracuse @ Minnesota (Big Ten Network)
MarQuies Gray is the Minnesota QB, He is also one of my sleepers this season. He’s big, athletic and can let it fly. He figures out the QB position and he could be a special find.
Syracuse has been in this post enough to know who I’m looking at for the Orange. They just happen to be playing a team I have been dying to watch. Shamarko Thomas is still among my early season favorites.
9:30 PM
Arizona @ Oregon (ESPN)
This game will be a shootout. Chiefs fans should love the offense in this game, as we haven’t seen enough to start the year.
Arizona has a huge fullback/running back option in Taimi Tutogi. More of a blocker than anything, but he is good at it. Has caught a few balls out of the backfield. Arizona has a very talented cornerback in Shaq Richardson.
Oregon, as usual, has a ton of offensive prospects. Check the offensive line with guard Carson York and tackle Nick Cody. These 2 open holes for running back Kenjon Barner. Once Barner gets into open field, forget about it. Defensively, Oregon has 2 guys I’m interested in: DE Dion Jordan and safety John Boyett.
CHIEFS SPIN
These games feature prospects from all over the country. Most fit into our current systems on offense and defense, but a few don’t. When Romeo first came to town as the teams defensive coordinator, I was excited for the 3-4 defense. I still love this style, but could see a change coming if the Chiefs continue to lose. I love what Bill Belichik did when he ran both the 3-4 and 4-3 as his base defense throughout the year. Maybe, instead of scrapping it all together, the Chiefs could take this route. We have the bigs up front and the secondary would be fine. The only concern is at linebacker. KC would need to add to the outside linebacker group.
As far as draft prospects go, in the current system, the Chiefs need to continue adding talent at every level. Tyson Jackson and/or Glenn Dorsey could leave next off-season, so a replacement is necessary. I don’t care what his role is, get me an upgrade over Jovan Belcher. I’ll put talent on the field over an extra blocker. The secondary needs depth that can step in for an injured starter and not be a huge dropoff. A lot to ask, but it’s doable.
Offensively, I’m fine with upgrades to the starting lineup and depth at every position. Quarterback is my number one priority. The 2013 NFL Draft will more than likely be loaded with top QB prospects. Can this be the year that we finally grab one? PLEASE!! Give me a young QB and Pioli can have his final year with Matt Cassel, I’ll let my guy sit and learn from Chiefs QB coach Jim Zorn. Other positions that may need addressed are left tackle if Branden Albert leaves, adding a WR if/when Dwayne Bowe leaves and a new, more dynamic tight end. A bruising fullback with rushing/receiving skills and another running back would be fine with me too.
Enjoy the games today and keep an eye open for the Chiefs. Hopefully Pioli gives this page a view.
