Last night during the Falcons Broncos game I was watching Sean Weatherspoon and William Moore making numerous plays for the Atlanta defense. Since I was already frustrated as a Chiefs fan, I tweeted out that I would trade the ATL duo for Derrick Johnson and Eric Berry. I did a little statistical number crunching, and the pairs aren’t that far off. Head inside for my attempt to persuade you, even though I understand this trade will never happen.
I broke this down into 6 defensive categories: tackles, sacks, interceptions, pass defended, forced fumbles and fumbles recovered. After I found the stats for these four, I divided each stat by the number of games they have played in their career. First, I’ll give you the individual numbers, then I added the teammates together to see how each couple compares.
Derrick Johnson- Has played in 108 games, has 639 tackles, 16 sacks, 9 interceptions, 50 passes defended, 17 forced fumbles and 5 fumble recoveries. His per game averages are: 5.91 tackles, .15 sacks, .08 interceptions, .46 passes defended, .15 forced fumbles and .04 fumble recoveries.
Eric Berry-Has played in 19 games, has 98 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 interceptions, 10 passes defended, 1 forced fumble and 0 fumble recoveries/ His per game averages are: 5.15 tackles, .10 sacks, .21 interceptions, .53 passes defended, .05 forced fumbles and 0 fumble recoveries/
Together the Chiefs pair combines for per game averages of: 11.16 tackles, .25 sacks, .29 interceptions, .99 pass defended, .20 forced fumbles and .04 fumbles recovered.
Sean Weatherspoon-Has played in 29 games, has 174 tackles, 6 sacks, 0 interceptions, 11 passes defended, 0 forced fumbles and 2 fumbles recovered. His per game averages are: 6 tackles, .20 sacks, 0 interceptions, .38 passes defended, 0 forced fumbles and .06 fumbles recovered.
William Moore-Has played in 32 games, has 143 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 9 interceptions, 20 passes defended, 3 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovered. His per game averages are: 4.46 tackles, .04 sacks, .28 interceptions, .62 passes defended, .09 forced fumbles and .03 fumbles recovered.
The Falcons pair combines for per game averages of: 10.46 tackles, .24 sacks, .28 interceptions, 1 pass defended, .09 forced fumble and .09 fumble recovery.
The stats show that these 2 duos are very close in every category. Given the youth of the Falcons pair, the attitude Weatherspoon brings to the table(which is something this team lacks) and the fact that they went to Mizzou, I’d make this trade.
