The Chiefs have a bevy of options of who to use the first pick in the draft on. The consensus will be that they need to select a quarterback with the top pick; I agree with this, but every option must be explored. The first guy I will be previewing will be Utah stud defensive tackle, Star Lotulelei.
I know most Chiefs fans would groan at spending another early draft pick on a defensive lineman, but unlike Tyson Jackson or Dontari Poe, Lotulelei would make an immediate impact. He could play either end in the 3-4 or nose tackle, so he’s very versatile.
Lotulelei is a physical freak. He possesses an elite combination of size, power, and quickness that is extremely rare in someone of his size. He explodes off the line and beats his blockers using great power and speed. He totaled 44 tackles (9 for a loss), 1.5 sacks, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble in his junior season.
His senior season was more of the same, he totaled 42 tackles (11 for a loss), and 5 sacks, 4 pass breakups, and 3 forced fumbles. The numbers don’t show just how disruptive he was, he consistently demanded extra blockers.
His biggest knock is consistency. He has been known to take plays off and relies too much on natural ability rather than technique. If he works on his motor and touches up his technique, he could be quite a “star” at the next level.
New Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey has said he will take the best player available, Lotulelei might just be that.
What are your thoughts on the Chiefs picking a DT in round one again?
