The hot rumor the past 2 days has been Andy Reid to the Arizona Cardinals was all but a done deal. Not so fast my friends. Chris Mortensen of ESPN is reporting that the Chiefs will fly to Philly today to interview the recently fired Eagles head coach. Reid would definitely fill Clark Hunt’s need for a leader as Head Coach that has experience building a franchise.
The hiring of Reid could potentially answer a few questions in the Chiefs organization. Head Coach being the most obvious. He can work with whoever the Chiefs bring in as Quarterback, Geno Smith being a great fit for what Reid likes to do. The Pioli issue may also clear up quicker than expected. With the Browns firing their GM Tom Heckert recently, he would immediately jump to the front of the line in KC with Reid at HC.
Heckert and Reid worked together in Philadelphia for years building a powerhouse team from 2001-2008. Heckert and Reid worked hand in hand on all personnel decisions. This relationship is another piece that Clark Hunt covets. A Head Coach and GM working in tandem, reporting to him.
Pat Shurmur was the Browns HC, but was also fired on Monday. He has worked with Reid in the past and is a former QB coach and offensive coordinator. Could he join this group in Kansas City as QB coach or OC? Could do a lot worse.
I know we have all been hard on Clark Hunt recently, for a lot of things, but hats off to him for targeting the top guy in his mind and going to him. He didn’t sit around and wait for a coach to come to him. If Clark signs Reid on as his next head coach, he deserves a ton of credit from Chiefs fans. Now grab Heckert as “GM” or whatever he will be in Kansas City and let them do work.
