Rapid Reaction: Eric Winston Cut

Just two days after John Dorsey made great moves signing Dwayne Bowe and Dustin Colquitt to new deals and franchise tagging Branden Albert, they decide to release their best offensive lineman from the year before. It’s clear that this franchise is not done making big moves and the #1 pick is just getting foggier and foggier.

Read on to hear my thoughts on the Winston release.

There are a multitude of reasons that could explain Winston’s release.

1. The Chiefs wanted to save space on the cap. Which really doesn’t make sense, PFT reports that the Chiefs would only save $700,000 this year against the cap.

2. The Chiefs believe Donald Stephenson is ready to play right tackle. That could be the case. Stephenson played well last year at LT and could fit better as a RT. He would be much cheaper too.

3. Winston won’t be a fit for the new offense. Winston fits best in a zone-blocking scheme. There’s a chance the Chiefs line plays a more power type scheme and not so much zone.

4. They plan on drafting Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher. Another reasonable explanation. But if that’s the case, they’ll move Albert to RT, something that he said he would not be comfortable doing.

Any of these scenarios could make sense. The Chiefs surprised the public again with this move and I expect more surprising moves going forward as they try to change the outlook and culture of the team. When you go 2-14 one season, turnover is to be expected the next.

What do you think of the Winston release?

  1. Yancey Berry says:

He did give 8 penalties and 6 sacks. I guess going to more pass-oriented offense maybe needs a change..hopefully they Stephenson over a draft pick..
