Chiefs Improve Secondary by Signing CB Sean Smith

This was the move that fans have been waiting for since free agency started. The Chiefs have had a huge hole at cornerback across from Brandon Flowers. We knew they were targeting one, but they hadn’t signed one until today. The Chiefs signed Sean Smith to a reported three-year, $18 million dollar contract with $11 million guaranteed. The Chiefs got a steal at that price.

Sean Smith was arguably the best corner on the market. He’s a taller corner at 6’3″ 218, a height at which the Chiefs secondary was lacking. He’s a good fit to go man-to-man with taller receivers but isn’t a good fit for a zone scheme. The Chiefs have to be excited about his age too, as he’s only 25 years old.

Smith entered the league in 2009 out of Utah as a second round pick of the Dolphins. He’s totaled 211 tackles, 5 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 40 pass deflections in his four-year NFL career.

Read on to hear my thoughts on the Sean Smith signing.

NFL Free Agency officially started on Tuesday, but the Chiefs have already signed five players. This move was speculated on early in the free agency process but just recently became official. With DeVito’s former defensive coach, Bob Sutton, the new defensive coordinator in KC, it’s easy to see the natural fit here.

DeVito came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Maine in 2007. He’s accumulated 202 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 6 forced fumbles in his seven-year pro career thus far.

Read on to hear my analysis on the DeVito signing.

Another signing is official. Lots of Chiefs fans should be happy with the signing of the former Mizzou quarterback. Daniel has agreed in principle to a 3-year deal. Money has not been revealed yet.

Daniel entered the league as an undrafted free agent of the Washington Redskins in 2009. Daniel has minimal playing experience so far in his 4-year career, but has been a backup to Drew Brees in New Orleans for the past couple of seasons.

Read on to hear my analysis of the Daniel signing.

The Chiefs will make their first move of free agency on a tight end. First reported by Mike Garafolo of USA Today Sports, the Chiefs will add tight end Anthony Fasano of the Miami Dolphins to their roster. The specs of the contract aren’t out yet, but the Chiefs have in fact signed Fasano.

Fasano was drafted in the 2nd round out of Notre Dame by the Cowboys back in 2006. The 7-year pro has hauled in 205 receptions for 2,373 yards and 24 touchdowns in his career with the Cowboys and Dolphins.

Read on to hear my thoughts on the Fasano deal.
