Football is a game of matchups…what I am going to attempt to do is bring you those matchups, and where those matchups play in the Chiefs favor.  This Report is broken up into 4 categories…The Pass, The Run, and how the Chiefs defend it.

This week the Chiefs face the 2nd best passing game from a year ago.  It’s an offense that get yards by the chunk…and can score anywhere with the run or passing game.  Defensively this is a group that can give up yards in the pass game, but do well not to get beat deep.

What sticks out for me leading up to this, is the contrast between the clubs.  Both teams are built to exploit each other.  The Chiefs with their outside run game and ball control passing…The Boys with their ability to spread the Chiefs out, which has been issue for this defense.

So lets get to it….

For some people, change is difficult and often hard to understand. A different perspective takes most out of their comfort zone and makes learning the new ways a necessity. After the past few years of the Scott Pioli era in Kansas City, Chiefs fans are welcoming change with open arms. Some Chiefs fans are still unsure what to expect heading into tonight’s draft. We have you covered with a detailed look at which positions and conferences these men tend to select and in which round. Some of the numbers give great insight into their strategy.

I would like to introduce you to the men who were hired to turn the Chiefs franchise into one of the league’s best, Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey and Head Coach Andy Reid. Two highly decorated NFL decision makers, who are now calling the shots in the Kansas City Chiefs War Room.

Andy Reid Reaches Agreement with Chiefs

According to reports from Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen, Andy Reid will be the next head coach of the Chiefs.

While I would have preferred Oregon’s Chip Kelly, Andy Reid is a proven commodity with NFL success. Reid has 30+ more wins since 1999 than the Chiefs organization during that same period. Does this mean success in Kansas City?

It means change. Change isn’t always a good thing, but in the Chiefs case it was necessary. The fans were done with the previous regime midway thru the season and the situation only got worse. While Reid doesn’t have the most impressive draft history, he has found some gems and surprised some people. Like in 1999 when he went with Donovan McNabb in the first round. We hope he does the same in 2013 with a QB in the first like Geno SMith, Tyler Wilson or even Matt Barkley.

Helping Reid make this selection will be his hand picked personnel man Tom Heckert. Does Heckert’s addition mean the end for Pioli in KansasCity? I think only if the “neutered” GM resigns. Pioli is due a lot of money and would be stupid to turn it down unless a buyout is offered.

Details of Reid’s coaching staff have not been released at this time, but you have to assume that Pat Shurmur will be either the QB’s Coach or Offensive Coordinator. Defensive Coordinator is a tricky guess because of the Chiefs 3-4 personnel and Reid using a 4-3 in Philly. Does he grab a DC with 3-4 experience or attempt to overhaul the Chiefs defense?  One guy I would give a look to if wanting to keep the 3-4 is University of Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. He runs a nasty defense at UGA and his lineup is filled with NFL talent.

As mentioned earlier, the Chiefs have to find a QB with outstanding accuracy to excel in Reid’s system. Geno SMith is among the most accurate in the upcoming draft. It seems like the perfect storm for Reid and this situation. IF Reid is hired and an accurate QB is added, this team could be in line to contend in the 2013 season,at the very least for a division title.

Look at the WR the Chiefs should line up with in 2013: Bowe should re-sign and be a top target, Breaston will jump out of the doghouse to do big things and Dexter McCluster and Devon Wylie should have the biggest jumps in their production. Wylie was starting to see some targets towards the end of the year, validating on a few occasions his 4th round selection.

Looking at how Reid used LeSean McCoy, Jamaal Charles should see more touches in the passing game. This is a positive, getting Charles the ball in space is always to your advantage.

While Reid wasn’t my first choice, this hiring is growing on me. As long as a strong defensive coordinator is signed, that is.
