Round 1 - Pick 1 – Dion Jordan, LB, Oregon

The Chiefs have to be thinking trade here with the current players on roster. OT is the pick for everyone else but I don’t want to see Albert go and I don’t want to draft a second OT with the number one pick. Give me the elite defensive playmaker that can be moved around to exploit matchups any day.

With free agency basically over for the Chiefs (Branden Albert trade still waiting to happen), the team’s needs left will be filled by the draft. I’ll determine who the Chiefs might select in every round (comp picks included) in this 7 round mock draft.

The Chiefs take a tackle with upside first overall.

The Chiefs have been quite active in free agency. They have filled holes on their roster, and improved the team. A quick overview:

Round 1

Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

A lot of people still have the Chiefs selecting Luke Joeckel with the first pick; however, I still believe the opposite. There’s a good bet that whatever quarterback separates himself from the rest will be taken first, and most likely first overall. Geno, based off the tape, is the best signal caller available in this year’s class.

1. Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia

The Chiefs must take a chance on a signal caller with the number one overall pick. The number one QB on my board is Geno Smith. He possesses great footwork, a quick release, the ability to diagnose a defense presnap and audible, as well as the ability to go through multiple reads. He doesn’t often force throws but he will put the ball in a place where the WR can make a play and nobody else can.

We only have 4 weeks of football left in Kansas City in 2012. The roster we thought was among the leagues most talented and deepest in preseason hasn’t lived up to the hype. The positions that will need upgrades are obvious and if they weren’t I received numerous messages on Twitter about which positions need to be upgraded.

Some mocks might say that there aren’t any “franchise” QBs available, but I see it differently. Look at the draft with Matt Ryan. Many said the exact same things about him and now he’s an MVP candidate. My point is, we need a QB in Kansas City desperately and we will have our choice. Target a QB and go get him. The fans will support it just for the fact you are trying to improve the position.

The rest of this draft I filled with help in areas of need. Defensive back, Wide Receiver and Defensive Line to name a few. Let me know what you think or how you would handle this in the comments.
